About Me

with 16 comments

I am a 2008 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh journalism graduate with bylines in dailies, weeklies, bi-weeklies, Volleyball magazine and as the national columnist at D3baseball.com. Besides my writing background, I also have experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, the Presto Sports interface, copy editing and managing a staff.

This blog started as part of a journalism class project that included a website [now defunct, thanks to the powers that be] dedicated to the 2007 UW-Oshkosh women’s volleyball team. The site featured Flash, Dreamweaver, HTML and other bells and whistles. The continuation of this blog after the original site’s cessation reflects my interest in volleyball and in sports writing.

Here are four videos I and a partner shot, edited and produced in 2007. Alas, some of our better videos were only housed on our site and not YouTube.
UW Oshkosh vs. UW-Whitewater
UW Oshkosh vs. UW-Stevens Point
UW Oshkosh vs. MSOE
UW Oshkosh vs. Lakeland

UPDATE: Curse this journalism job market! I, Ricky Nelson (ricky.nelson08@gmail.com), would appreciate a paying sports journalism or SID job, if you have one to offer. In the meantime I’ll continue to update the blog and watch volleyball.

UPDATE (8/25/14): I am the assistant sports information director at UW-Oshkosh. Fittingly, my first official task was to write player bios for the volleyball team. Twas a good first day.

UPDATE (10/18/22): I am no longer employed at UW-Oshkosh (for now).

  1. I meant to mention that the UW Platteville match with Emory is streaming live now. See http://www.emoryathletics.com for live video action.

  2. I feel your pain about the journalism job market. My son is a 2009 college graduate (Fordham U in NYC) and is looking for work in journalism, focusing more on politics and futurism. No luck so far.

  4. I did see that listing on the CoSIDA jobs page a few weeks ago. I know I can do the job, but the ad says I need a minimum of three years experience in sports information. I wish I had that experience but I don’t. I doubt my volleyball and baseball sites or my print background count as related fields.

It’s too bad because I really like the Platteville area and the university. Now if the next hire happens to need a modestly paid assistant, I’m his or her guy.

    Thank you for the heads-up,
    Ricky

  5. SOMETIMES PASSION AND WILLINGNESS TO WORK TRUMPS SO CALLED EXPERIENCE. NOT MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE WEB EXPERIENCE AND DEDICATION YOU HAVE DEMONSTRATED WITH THIS SITE.

  6. Alright Ricky, enjoy some of the fruits of your labor this season while trying to stay caught up here. If you get a chance to add some color (commentary) to the weekend, we’d recommend it. Diversify.

Good luck and enjoy. — Louie

  7. […] you have not read the “About Me” page, I have been trying for the past year or so to get my foot in the door of a sport information […]

  9. […] Albeit saccharine and dramatic, the paragraph above is sincere. If you have an open position, my email is ricky.nelson08@gmail.com. My resume and application materials are a few clicks away. My abridged background can be found on the About Me page. […]

  10. […] My work situation has changed. I mention it only because my time devoted to this blog will be curbed. I hope I can keep the updates timely this season. […]

  11. I just found your site looking for information on the d3 tourney and really appreciate all the information and effort you have put into this. Congrats on your new paying job! My daughter is a freshman oh playing for mary Hardin baylor an hour north of austin where we live. I am flying out to see them play Claremont on Friday night. My daughter got to play 3 sets in the conference semifinal after being fully released for 3 weeks after her 6 month acl rehab. We lost to Claremont in 4 early in the season with a setter coming off concussion and no subs for oh. Hope they can make a run. Thanks for all your work

  14. Ricky,
I really enjoy your site and your writing. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into it!!! I’m a big supporter of Northwestern (MN) volleyball. (I used to work there…). Also, my celebrated my alma mater winning it a couple of years ago. I am looking forward to the big match this weekend! I’m sure you are too.🙂
Keep up the great work. You are my first read everyday.

  15. Thank you for the kind words, Dave. UNW and UWEC are two of my favorite VB programs. Say hello if we’re ever in the same gym.
