8/30: #8 Eagles knock off #1 Tommies in 5

Opening Day means great nonconference matchups. Nonconference means there are Central and Midwest teams scattered around the nation. Scattered means a heavy workload for yours truly. Here is the outline for today. Make use of that refresh button. I’ll fill it in as the day progresses and scores are posted. Be sure to make use of the links for live coverage.

• No. 8 Emory snapped No. 1 St. Thomas’s 35-match winning streak in the season opener for both today. The Tommies went 40-1 on its way to the 2012 championship. The lone loss? To Emory, in five, 51 weeks ago. UST didn’t play well, but Emory earned this one after almost letting a 2-0 lead slip away.

DeLozier among 30 finalists for Woman of the Year

I missed the release by a week and a half, but Maranatha outside Torey DeLozier was the only Division III volleyball player to make the final 30 candidates for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award.  Ten former student-athletes from each of the three NCAA divisions make up the final 30 still up for the award, which takes into account athletic and classroom success along with volunteer and leadership involvement.

The NCAA will narrow the contenders down to nine — three from each division — in September.

Coaches, SIDs make their 2013 predictions

I decided to wait for most of the Central and Midwest region conference previews and lump them into one post this season. Links are to each conference’s preseason release. Teams listed are the preseason favorites, according to either the conferences’ coaches or sports information directors.

Turns out that I agree with each of the conference preseason favorites so far. I will update this post if the other league poll is released, but the UAA does not typically do preseason polls.

College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin: Elmhurst
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: Wartburg
Midwest Conference: Cornell
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: St. Thomas
Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference*: Benedictine
St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: Webster
University Athletic Association: [Washington-St. Louis]
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference: Northwestern
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: Wisconsin-Whitewater
*Changed name to avoid “NAC” confusion with Division III’s New England-based North Atlantic Conference

Link to my predictions for all Pool A conferences in 2013.
I’ve correctly predicted 61-of-84 conference winners over the past two seasons. I hope to improve that rate this year.
