2017 AVCA Week 10 poll: Colorado enters NCAA postseason No. 1

Colorado College heads into the Division III Championship atop the AVCA Week 10 poll.

The Tigers were followed in the rankings by No. 2 Calvin, No. 3 Wittenberg, No. 4 Trinity (Texas) and No. 5 Southwestern.

Central and Midwest region teams in the Week 10 top 25: No. 9 Northwestern; No. 11 Millikin; No. 13 Washington-St. Louis; No. 14 Illinois Wesleyan; No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus; No. 17 Carthage; No. 22 St. Thomas; No. 23 Chicago; No. 24 Wisconsin-Whitewater — the only top 25 team that will not take part in the NCAA postseason.

Central and Midwest region teams receiving votes this week: Wisconsin-La Crosse; Concordia Wisconsin; Aurora; Saint Benedict; Wisconsin-Eau Claire; Cornell; Wartburg; Wisconsin-Stevens Point; Augsburg.

My Week 10 top 10 had Millikin and Stevenson instead of Northwestern and Emory.

  1. Anyone else notice the regional ranking PDFs are all wrong? West is wrong. Just plain fiction. Spot checked the Midwest and same problem.

How Oshkosh didn’t get in with these new numbers is shocking.

  2. rbrochelle,
The PDFs had the correct, updated info whenever I checked yesterday. Hope that gets resolved.

  3. They are now fixed. I had to make some calls. Got the Russians involved. A little payola. All good.

  4. rbrochelle,
My blood pressure was elevated again after reliving what the committee did. I cannot imagine what it’s like to view those PDFs from the perspective of one of the teams just outside the field.

  5. To be more precise, I should say that looking at the PDFs is how the committee chose the teams. What’s required of a committee is to diligently drill down into the specific criteria. Looking beyond the Criteria Scorecard is not difficult, but it is time consuming. However, that is the only reason why we have committees. Alas …

  6. Ricky, do you know how the head to head and common opponent data is presented to the RAC? I agree it seems like the raw numbers are used and it also seems like h2h and common opponent are less important.

  7. during the offseason we traded thoughts on the decision to not rank 8 across all regions. I told you guys to not worry about it and it looks like i was very wrong. I truly felt that no one on a national committee would give a NE school credit for wins in the 9 to 12 range. It is just obviously specious data.

The results though say they must have used it. Wellesley was 7-4 (1-4 against top 8 teams and 6-0 against 9 to 12). Babson was 3 – 2 against top 8 and 4-2 against 9 to 12. Note these are ALL NE teams and Geneseo (NY).

Further, Ricky a few days back you casually observed why was Springfield still 12th in the 3rd poll as they were in free fall losing 8 of their final 9 matches. well it looks like Moira Long had a good reason to leave them there, both fellow NEWMAC schools Babson and Wellesley had wins over them. Babson got lucky and took a 2nd win in the league quarter finals.
And who took their spot at #12 in poll 4? Endicott, who went 0-3 against both schools. this was either very fortunate or very calculated. Endicott did win the 3rd best league so I guess we have to say lucky.

No matter, anyone who would say Wellesley’s 7-4 was a better RESULT than Whitewater;s 4-8 (one example) just does not get it!.

The change to 8 across the board has to be revisited and this year’s results are a case study as to why.

  8. It’s the eve of the 2017 NCAA Div III women’s volleyball tournament! Does anyone want to join me in showing the D3 world just how little volleyball knowledge we collectively have? A rub of my crystal volleyball and this is what I see…

    Central – Northwestern
    Great Lakes – Wittenberg
    Mid-Atlantic – Carnegie Mellon
    Midwest – Calvin
New England – Johnson & Wales
    New York – Ithaca
    South – Emory
    West – CMS

    C’mon, let’s have some fun….

  10. NED3VballFan,
Amen. The selections were incorrect. I hope the committee improves going forward. The collateral damage created over the past couple of years has been more than necessary.

  11. Curt,
I am THE worst at picking regional winners.
Unfortunately for you, my picks were the same as yours except I have La Crosse & Hopkins.

  12. rbrochelle,
The committee has (or at least used to have) a slick comparison tool that shows all of that data with a click.
