11/6/16: Last 9 AQ’s to be decided

Top 25 upset watch
#25 Hendrix 3, Berry 0

Nine teams will secure automatic berths in the field of 64 today. You can follow them live from the Conference Tourneys page. Is your team on the bubble? Then you’re a fan of Tufts and MIT today.

I will post my projected field this afternoon.

  1. I’m not too worried about Tufts or MIT today. They are both solid favorites. I saw Tufts play yesterday, very deep team, they finally get it done(last title 1996). MIT benefits from a Springfield misstep. Form holds and Springfield gets a pool C bid(doesn’t hurt that their coach is regional chair!).

NY is causing trouble. Upsets in the Liberty and NJAC. Both winners had 2 other league teams ranked above them. The poll tomorrow for this region should be very interesting. In the usual weird way upsets work I think this increases their chance of a consolation bid(0 to now 1).

It was fun complaining about not seeing the final poll. I hope what we see is more than just a pure ordering by tourney results.

UT-D had just enough gas in the tank to win 3 matches. so that shifted a bid back to the WIAC.

So here are 20 bids based on region top 5, AVCA rank, past region counts, and guessing. I hope there is a bid 21 for a team.
CE 3 (Wash U, Augsburg, St. Thomas)
    GL 3 (Calvin, Depauw, Heidelberg)
MA 2 (Carnegie Mellon, Chris Newport)
MW 5 (La Crosse, Oshkosh, Eau Claire, Stevens Point, Elmhurst)
    NE 1 (Springfield)
    NY 1? (Ramapo?)
    SO 1? (Berry?)
WE 4 (CMS, Southwestern(TX), Colorado College, La Verne)

Bid 21 list? St. Mary’s(MN), Ohio Wes, Mt. Union, Susquehanna, Chicago, Ithaca, Birmingham-Southern

  2. NED3VballFan,
I’m out the door soon for a few few hours, but I think we’re on the same page. I tentatively have 17 Pool C’s in, pending today’s results.

My teams still on the outside with four bids (I’m going with 21 Pool C’s) remaining include Christopher Newport, Susquehanna, Chicago, Illinois Wesleyan, Ramapo, Berry and Bethel. That’s in addition to Stevens/Ithaca and Hendrix/Berry plus the possibility of Tufts and MIT.

With some more crunching to go, Bethel and Illinois Wesleyan could be in the final rankings. I also think Ithaca may overtake Ramapo.
