  1. I am with you. CMS deserves the #1 spot. I just checked their record compared to Calvin and I would give them the edge because they beat higher ranked teams (including teams receiving votes). I keep beating a dead horse but we will see if “East coast bias” keeps them down.

I always felt Colorado was ranked a bit high especially since they had only beaten UT Dallas and UTD hadn’t played anyone else. It seems that they kept rising in the polls because top teams like Emory, Wittenberg, Hope, challenged themselves and took losses playing top teams. The same with UTD. Southwestern may be a bit high only because they have really only beaten Colorado and Trinity. I respect Trinity because although not ranked, they started their season playing top teams and challenging themselves. Even though they took losses, you could see right away they were a quality team and I still feel will be in the top 25 soon and may be better than CC. We will see when they meet again later in the season. Same for CMS and CalLu.

  2. Here is my West Region report. Some interesting results this weekend, but first my rankings:

    #1 CMS
    #2 Southwestern
    #3 Cal Lu
    #4 Trinity
    #5 Colorado College
    #6 UTD
    #7 Puget Sound
    #8 Whitworth

CMS had the home crowd and used it to beat Cal Lu in 4 sets after getting blown out in the first game. For now, CMS has secured its #1 West ranking. I still love Cal Lu and think they are the #2 team in the region but I’m dropping them to #3 because…

Southwestern destroyed Colorado College in a 3-set sweep on a weekend that saw Trinity also beat CC despite rather large leads by CC (9-0 and 18-11 in the first set and 7-3 in the fourth…both losses). Trinity was the big winner for the weekend as they have positioned themselves nicely for the upcoming official West rankings. (First meetings this week for the RACs????) Austin College put up a nice fight against SU and had a couple of close games against Trinity. This will not be a team others want to face in the SCAC tournament. Back to Trinity, Ricky will get a first-hand view of the fighting Tigers as they travel to Oshkosh for the UW-Oshkosh Invitational this weekend.

The big loser in my West rankings, however, are UTD despite winning all of their games this week. With CC falling down the rankings, it also causes UTD to drop since they lost to CC earlier in the year.

Out in the Northwest Conference, Puget Sound and Whitworth have separated themselves from the rest. I really hate giving two spots in my top 8 to that conference but for now there is no clear option in the SCIAC or ASC.

  3. I don’t disagree with these West rankings. It’s not often that I get to see good West teams in person, but I look forward to seeing Trinity this weekend.

The 2016-17 Manual is not online. Last year’s regional rankings were published Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5, so we have a ways to go before any official orders.
