2015 AVCA Week 3 poll: Unbeaten Juniata ascends to top spot

Juniata moved up three spots to overtake the top spot in the 2015 AVCA Week 3 poll. The Eagles outlasted current No. 2 Christopher Newport over the weekend to remain unbeaten. Washington-St. Louis, Emory and Calvin round out the top five.

Juniata received 54 of 63 first-place votes. Washington-St. Louis nabbed three top votes, Carthage got one, Calvin and Emory somehow had two apiece, and Christopher Newport somehow received one. C’mon, people. Vote! Either that or vote better. There are several correct answers each week. There are also incorrect answers. Calvin at the top is an incorrect answer.

Other Central and Midwest teams in the top 25: No. 6 Carthage; No. 10 UW-Stevens Point; No. 11 Chicago; No. 15 UW-Whitewater; No. 16 Elmhurst; No. 19 Augsburg; No. 22 UW-Oshkosh; No. 23 Illinois Wesleyan.

Central and Midwest teams receiving votes this week: Saint Benedict; Coe; St. Thomas; Wartburg; Dominican; UW-Eau Claire; Bethel.

I was one of the people who would have voted Washington-St. Louis first. I knew I would be in the minority, but I didn’t think Calvin, Emory and CNU were in the conversation at No. 1. Let’s all agree to make it our beeswax to vote next week.

  1. Lot of funny votes when you start looking through the individual ballots. Still a lot of missing ballots. I really like the coaches that lose to a team during the week and then rank their team ahead of the team that beat them. Oh well.

Looking towards the west, I’ll keep Claremont and Cal Lu at the top. The rest of the teams are a ranking problem. I think most people like to use head-to-head to determine who is better but there has been enough cross play in the west where team A beats B but loses to C that lost to B that it becomes impossible. I think after the SoCal top 2 the next group of teams are ETBU, UTD, Southwestern, CC and La Verne in some order. The 8th team will be Whitworth that swept by Pac Lu this week. I can’t move them into the previous grouping due to their 3 set losses to SU and UTD.

Back to my grouping, based on this week’s play, I have to give UTD some love. Then ETBU and then CC. I will then slot SU at the front (wins over Trinity and TLU) and La Verne at the back (5 set loss to Claremont). They could all flip around next week as SU and CC play on a neutral court this weekend. For now, it’s Claremont, Cal Lu, SU, UTD, ETBU, CC, La Verne and Whitworth.

The surprising note of the week in the west is at no time did I consider UMHB in my rankings. Pre-season I thought they could be the 3rd best team in the west (and certainly not lower than 5th). With a loss to Concordia (TX) this week, it’s apparent their problems will take a little longer to repair.
