2015 AVCA Week 2 poll: Top 3 unchanged

Emory, Calvin and Christopher Newport remained the top three teams in the AVCA Week 2 poll.  Juniata and UW-Stevens Point rounded out the top five.

Other Central and Midwest teams in the Week 2 top 25: No. 6 Washington-St. Louis; No. 8 Carthage; No. 13 Chicago; No. 14 Elmhurst; No. 16 UW-Whitewater; No. 20 Augsburg; No. 24 UW-Oshkosh; No. 25 Dominican.

Hurrah and huzzah for the Dominican recognition!

Central and Midwest teams receiving votes this week: Coe; Bethel; Illinois Wesleyan; St. Thomas; Wartburg; Saint Benedict.

My Week 2 top 10 and the voters’ was pretty close. Now we just need to clean up the middle and the back end of the AVCA poll.

  1. For the west, I’m sticking with Claremont, Cal Lu and Colorado College as my top 3. I thought about moving CC up the list (and still may do it) but all of their games have been at home. They actually play ETBU away Thursday prior to conference and that will be another good test for them.

The surprise of the west had to be ETBU’s victory over Southwestern. ETBU really just destroyed SU in the first two games before SU figured it out and took the next two before ETBU won 15-13 in the 5th. Although SU has a better record against a common opponent and the NCAA (for some reason) thinks that is equal to a head-to-head win, I feel safe putting ETBU in the #4 slot this week (small joke…couldn’t help myself). I’ll move SU down one spot to #5, followed by La Verne. I’m struggling with La Verne as they haven’t played much and they own a 5-set win over LeTourneau who was destroyed by Southwestern over the weekend. Really need to see them against SCIAC teams.

The last two spots are tough after some interesting results in the Northwest. I was pretty sure UTD would sweep their games this weekend but a loss to Pac Lu was surprising. Especially after Trinity beat Pac Lu and Trinity has been struggling so far this year. UMHB continues to struggle although they played some good teams this weekend. I’ll go Pac Lu #7 followed by UTD to round out the eight. Whitworth was the other considered team after a nice win over DePauw and the mandatory loss to Carthage by a West Region team (Carthage is really #1 in the west). Their loss to UTD in 3 games two weeks ago has them outside looking in this week.

Conference play starts this weekend for most teams in the west and there will be some good games that will help with the west rankings:

Whitworth at Pac Lu – I don’t see the Northwest Conference getting more than 1 bid this year and this game will go a long way to determine that bid.

Southwestern vs Trinity (neutral court) – Trinity is 10-1 over the last 4 years against SU!

UTD at ETBU – Two best teams in the ASC square off tonight.

Colorado College at ETBU – This may be the best of the SCAC going against the best of the ASC.

La Verne at Cal Lu – Cal Lu (and CMS) then go to Emory over the weekend for some stiff competition.

Last note – CONGRATS to Mallory Sanders (ETBU) for being named the player of the week in DIII. Representing the west well.
