2015 AVCA Week 1 poll: Emory nearly unanimous

Emory, which beat preseason No. 1 Calvin in four sets in Grand Rapids over the weekend, ascended to the top spot in the AVCA Week 1 poll.

Calvin fell just one spot to No. 2, followed by Christoper Newport, Carthage and Juniata. Rounding out the top 10 are sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point, Wittenberg at No. 7, Washington-St. Louis at No. 8, Hope at No. 9, and Cal Lutheran.

Emory received 62 of 63 first-place votes. Christopher Newport nabbed the other top vote.

Other Central and Midwest region teams in the top 25: No. 14 Elmhurst; No. 15 Chicago; No; 17 UW-Whitewater; No. 20 St. Thomas; No. 21 UW-Oshkosh; No. T23 Coe; and No. 25 Augsburg.

Central and Midwest region teams receiving votes: Cornell; Bethel; Nebraska Wesleyan; Northwestern; Wartburg; UW-Platteville; and Dominican. Kudos to the voters for slipping Dominican in there. Baby steps count for something.

As a reminder, my Week 1 top 10 teams were: Emory; Carthage; Calvin; Washington-St. Louis; Juniata; Christopher Newport; UW-Stevens Point; Cal Lutheran; Wittenberg; Chicago/Colorado College (tie).

  1. From the West Region, I had Claremont, Cal Lu, Colorado College, Southwestern, UMHB, LaVerne and Whitworth from the preseason.

I’m feeling pretty good about the first 4 and kudos to the voters for getting SU in the Top 25 this week. Based on the games I saw and the results from this weekend I would probably now have to go LaVerne #5 followed by UTD, Whitworth and Pac Lu.

I didn’t realize UMHB had so many girls leave the program and it looks like their really good OH from last year is only playing defense (injury?). I really liked UTD as they are much stronger defensively. They are the favorites for me in the ASC now. They go to the Northwest this weekend and should do well. It will also give me an indication on how good Pac Lu is (I’m not currently a believer).

I guess Trinity was the disappointment this weekend but with so many new players this had to be expected (although they somehow are still getting votes). They have a great coach and I’m sure the fear in the SCAC is that they will turn this around in time for conference.

No big issues with the Top 25. Still early. Just wish some of these coaches might dive a little a deeper before giving a vote to a team with 2 or more losses after the first week of play.

  2. Looking through the coaches ballots…Becky Schmidt (Hope) is the Chris Newport believer. Also, if there are 63 ballots and over 10 of them are blank does that mean they don’t allow them to be released or is the AVCA doing some funky thing with their votes? I think I asked this last year but don’t remember the response.

  3. having watched chicago, uw whitewater, and elmhurst this past weekend, imo uw whitewater was the most impressive team while chicago obviously earned the biggest win over hope. elmhurst’s ranking is too high, they are rebuilding and will tumble when they start playing good teams.

  4. I saw the same thing with the empty ballots. I do not know the answer to that question though.

  5. Thank you for the West update.
I wasn’t sold on CMS being the cream of the West without Breitweiser. Still not sure which team is the pace car. My candidates are CLU and Colorado College.
UTD definitely made me notice. I’m on board with Southwestern and Whitworth still being very much in the mix.

  6. I caught the end of UWW at Coe tonight. The Warhawks looked good on the stream. I admittedly shortchanged them in the preseason due to graduation hits.

  7. When they are left blank, the voting coach has not submitted his or her votes in time to be considered. You’ll typically see this happen after a really busy weekend.

  8. I think the question is what happens when a coach or several coaches cannot fill out a ballot. Are there reserve voters to get to the listed 63 or is there another scenario at play?
