AVCA Week 10 poll: St. Ben’s rises to 6th

There’s one voter who doesn’t believe last Saturday happened, but Calvin, with its five-set win over then-No. 1 Hope last weekend, nearly unanimously reclaimed the top spot in the Week 10 AVCA poll. Calvin received 47 first-place votes. No. 2 Hope hung onto one top vote.

Central and Midwest teams in the Week 10 top 25: No. 4 St. Thomas; No. 5 Elmhurst; No. 6 Saint Benedict; No. 11 Washington-St. Louis; No. 13 Augsburg; No. 16 Chicago; No. 19 UW-Stevens Point; No. 20 Cornell.

Saint Benedict fell in five to St. Thomas in the MIAC final but the Blazers moved up a spot. It’s CSB’s second-highest poll showing, trailing only the fifth-place ranking established in 1993, the second year of the AVCA poll.

Other Central and Midwest teams receiving votes this week: UW-Whitewater; Coe; Wartburg.

This is the last AVCA poll until after the tournament.

I’ll repeat what I’ve been typing for weeks — UW-Stevens Point deserves to be ranked much, much higher. I had the Pointers 10th this week. Granted, that’s higher than any of the AVCA voters. However, a few of the Pointers’ peers had them in the 11-14 range. That’s a fairer reflection of UWSP’s season to date than the No. 19 ranking.
