AVCA Week 6 poll: Pointers re-enter top 25

Calvin, the lone unbeaten D-III team, remains firmly entrenched in the top spot in the AVCA Week 6 poll. After a 4-0 weekend, Calvin (23-0) has now defeated 10 teams that received votes in this week’s poll.

Trivia time: Calvin has lost one set since opening day. What team stole that set? Was it No. 2 Hope, No. 6 Elmhurst, No. 9 Mount Union, No. 11 Washington-St. Louis, No. 13 Wittenberg, No. 14 Otterbein, No. 17 Puget Sound or No. 19 Chicago? No, the Knights swept those matches. It was Albion, obviously.

Other Central or Midwest teams in the Week 6 top 25: No. 5 St. Thomas; No. 8 Saint Benedict; No. 15 Augsburg; No. 20 UW-Whitewater; No. 22 Cornell; No. 23 UW-Stevens Point. UWSP, in the top 25 after three weeks just on the outside, replaced Williams in the poll.

Central or Midwest teams receiving votes in the Week 6 poll: Coe; Wartburg; Concordia-Moorhead; Nebraska Wesleyan.

As a reminder, here’s my Week 6 top 10. Quite similar to the AVCA poll, but I have No. 12 Eastern and Washington-St. Louis instead of Saint Benedict and No. 9 Mount Union. That’s well within the margin of error. I don’t even disagree necessarily. Augsburg, St. Ben’s, Witt, Mount and Pac Lu were my next five.

  1. I was wondering where you had Augsburg as this is the team I would have inserted into the Top 10. Would also have Eastern in there (as do you). Looking forward to seeing how Eastern does against both Trinity and Southwestern this weekend. Southwestern dealing with injuries and Trinity just threw up a stinker against TLU.

  2. With some more head-to-heads and losses sprinkled among the top teams last week, there were some coin flips for me. Augsburg’s schedule has been solid, but WUSTL’s is a bit better. That combined with wins over Whitewater and DePauw last weekend made the difference this week.

I didn’t make a precise top 25 this week, but after the 15 I listed were: Stevens Point; Chicago; Whitewater; Otterbein; Coe; CMS; Cornell; UMHB; Puget Sound; Stevenson. In the mix: Wartburg; Clarkson; Trinity; Roger Williams; and some others.

I won’t argue anyone who says the Auggies are deserving of the top 10. Jane Becker is lucky that teams get so much better wherever she coaches. It’s the darnedest thing. Luther and Augsburg were bad and middling, respectively, when she arrived. She wasn’t shabby as the St. Thomas setter either. I selfishly hope she stays in D-III though.
