AVCA 2013 Week 1 poll: Calvin No. 1

Undefeated Calvin garnered 37 first-place votes and easily out-pointed undefeated Emory for the top spot in the first AVCA poll of the 2013 season. Emory, my top team, received eight first-place votes. No. 3 St. Thomas (6-1, with a loss to Emory) somehow got two top votes and No. 5 Hope (8-0) snagged the final one. Sandwiched among those teams is No. 4 Elmhurst.

Washington-St. Louis is ranked sixth, followed by Cal Lutheran, Otterbein, Mount Union and Wittenberg.

Other Central and Midwest teams in the top 25: No. 13 Chicago; No. 15 Saint Benedict; No. 19 UW-Whitewater; No. 20 Carthage; No. 22 Wartburg.

Central/Midwest teams receiving votes: Augsburg; UW-Stevens Point; Cornell; Nebraska Wesleyan; UW-Eau Claire; Bethel; Edgewood.

I’m loving these polls with 48 voters. One week in and they’re more responsive than I’ve ever seen from AVCA D-III voters. That doesn’t mean I agree with everything (they’ll come around to St. Ben’s, why is UW-Whitewater ahead of Carthage?, etc.), but it’s much, much better (hello, CMS, Stevenson, Augsburg, Stevens, Roger Williams, etc.). The “much, much better” portion never happened over the past six years or so.
