AVCA 2012 Week 2 poll: WUSTL nearly unanimous No. 1

Last week there was a tie between Washington-St. Louis and Christopher Newport at the top of the AVCA poll. WUSTL (10-0) beat four ranked teams at home last weekend and received 22 first-place votes to take over the top spot in the AVCA Week 2 poll. CNU (7-1), which lost to Wittenberg, somehow snagged one top vote but fell to fourth in the poll. Wittenberg (6-0) beat three ranked teams at home last weekend, got the remaining top vote and moved up to second in the poll. No. 3 Calvin and No. 5 Emory round out this week’s top five.

My Week 2 rankings vary from the poll slightly, but I think the pollsters have a solid top 10 once again. I take issue with CNU getting a vote for No. 1, but it is what it is. I’m also a bit confused about Chicago being ahead of Elmhurst since EC beat UC this season and both have very respectable losses.

No. 18 Saint Benedict and No. 24 Concordia-Moorhead fell from the top 25. No. 24 Salisbury and No. 25 Bowdoin entered the poll for the first time this season. Salisbury is ranked for the first time since 2008.

Other Central/Midwest teams in the poll: No. 8 St. Thomas; No. 10 UW-Whitewater; No. 13 Chicago; No. 15 Elmhurst; No. 16 Carthage; No. 18 Wartburg.
Receiving votes: Saint Benedict; UW-Stevens Point; North Central (Ill.); Millikin; Concordia-Moorhead.

Fourteen additional programs were on just one ballot thus not included in the rankings. That lump of mystery teams could be your answer to, “Where is my team, which has ____?” The Week 1 poll had 51 total teams with 43 on multiple ballots. Week 2 has 52 total teams with just 38 on multiple ballots.
