AVCA 2012 Week 1 poll: WashU, CNU tied at top

Preseason No. 1 Christopher Newport ceded some votes to preseason No. 2 Washington-St. Louis and the two are tied atop the Week 1 AVCA poll. The Captains and Bears are followed by fellow unbeatens Calvin, Emory and Wittenberg in the top five. (Emory’s loss to NAIA Lee University yesterday was not considered in this week’s voting)

My order is still a bit different, but with few upsets during opening weekend, the poll wasn’t going to show much movement. As I stated earlier, WashU is my No. 1 team. But until defending national champion Wittenberg loses, the Tigers get my top vote.

My favorite part of the poll is the responsiveness. Saint Benedict and Puget Sound won major tournaments on opening weekend. Both went from receiving votes to comfortably in the top 25.

Other teams that were in my preseason top 30 – Salisbury, St. Norbert – have already received recognition after not appearing in the preseason poll. On the flip side, some of my undiscovered diamonds – Dominican, Cornell – limped out of the gates. However, I’m still awaiting the Geneva Recognition. It’ll be a capitalized pun until the Golden Tornadoes are acknowledged.

Other Central/Midwest teams in the Week 1 poll: No. 7 St. Thomas, No. 11 Elmhurst, No. 12 UW-Whitewater, No. 14 Chicago, No. 16T Carthage, No. 18 Saint Benedict, No. 21 Wartburg, No. 24 Concordia-Moorhead.
Receiving votes: Millikin, St. Norbert, UW-Stevens Point, North Central (Ill.), St. Scholastica, UW-Eau Claire.
