AVCA Week 5 Poll: Cobbers back in top 10

Concordia-Moorhead (13-3) was rewarded after the Cobbers swept ranked MIAC rival St. Thomas (16-3) last week. Concordia went from No. 12 to No. 10 in the Week 5 AVCA poll, rising past the Tommies and Juniata. Juniata (14-4) fell from No. 10 to No. 11, making it the second time the Eagles have ever been outside the top 10.

Calvin (15-0) and Washington (17-0) remained the top two teams, but Wash U gained a first-place vote. Defending champion Calvin garnered 21 top votes to Washington’s three.

Wittenberg (14-2) fell one spot to No. 4 as the Tigers were the lone top-10 team to suffer a loss last week, falling to Otterbein. Otterbein is now receiving votes.

Whitworth (11-4) vaulted back into the rankings at No. 21 after two NWC wins over ranked opponents.

The AVCA voters and I agree on the top 10 teams this week. We still don’t agree at the top, but the rest is nearly the identical.

The teams receiving votes is being pared down nicely as the season progresses. A mere 32 teams were named on two or more ballots.

Central and Midwest teams receiving Week 5 AVCA votes:
2. Washington 17-0
7. Carthage 15-2
10. Concordia-Moorhead 13-3
12. St. Thomas 16-3
16. Chicago 18-2
22. UW-Whitewater 15-4
24. UW-Platteville 14-6
25. Elmhurst 13-4
27. Wartburg 16-5
