Upsets, upsets everywhere upsets

UW-Stevens Point and UW Oshkosh pulled upsets in the WIAC. Wisconsin Lutheran and Aurora did likewise in the NAC. In the MIAC, Bethel and Gustavus pulled off upsets. Some of the upsets are in the eye of the beholder, though. The only one that really surprises me is Aurora beating Benedictine.

In my top matchup of the week, Carthage eked out a five-set road win over Chicago.

UW Oshkosh 3, No. 23 UW-Platteville 1. Saw it in the gym. Set 4 ended, 25-23, on a UWP double. A very well played match (UWO outhit UWP .318 to .233) in both teams’ WIAC opener. Not many teams beat UWP by being more physical, but that’s what UWO did tonight. There were many stars on both sides of the net, but the star of the night for me was UWO setter Morgan Liebetrau. The imposing UWP defense is predicated on four strong hands at the net – it’s not the greatest digging team – and after the first set Liebetrau was setting money balls frequently at two and zero hands all across the net and finished with 58 assists. When there were four hands, the UWO hitters, especially outside Morgan Nick (19-2-37) and opposite Sarah Petermann (13-4-31), found seams or tooled effectively.
UW-Stevens Point 3, No. 21 UW-Whitewater 0. WIAC opener. UWSP’s first WIAC win over UWW since 1985. Not that big of a surprise for me. The Pointers have it in them with tremendous blocking potential and a talented, young setter. UWW hit .063.
UW-Eau Claire 3, UW-Stout 0. WIAC opener. UWEC hit .324. UWEC’s Emily Neave had 40 assists.
Dominican 3, MSOE 0. MSOE hit -.021. DU is 3-0 in the NAC. MSOE is 0-2.
Lakeland 3, Alverno 0. LC had 10 aces. LC is 1-1 in the NAC. AC is 0-2.
Wisconsin Lutheran 3, Edgewood 0. WLC outhit EC .279 to -.071. EC’s (2-1) first NAC loss. WLC’s (1-2) first NAC win.
Aurora 3, Benedictine 2. 25-17, 15-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-5. No additional info available. That’s an upset. AU’s (1-2) first NAC win. It was BU’s NAC opener.
Concordia Chicago 3, Rockford 1. CUC is 2-1 in the NAC. RC is 1-2. No additional info available.
Augsburg 3, Macalester 0. AC is 1-1 in the MIAC. MC is 0-2.
Bethel 3, No. 10 Concordia-Moorhead 2. Set 5 ended 15-10. CCM won Set 3, 25-9. BU is 2-0 in the MIAC. CCM is 1-1.
No. 12 St. Thomas 3, Carleton 0. UST (2-0 MIAC) hit .389. CC (1-1) scored 36 points.
Gustavus 3, RV St. Olaf 2. GAC’s (1-1) Angela Ahrendt went 18-1-39. SOC falls to 0-2 in the MIAC.
St. Catherine 3, Saint Mary’s 1. Set 4 ended 29-27. SMU is 1-2 in the MIAC. St. Kate’s is 1-1.
Saint Benedict 3, Hamline 1. CSB (2-0 MIAC) outhit HU (0-2 MIAC) .289 to .058.
Loras 3, Simpson 0. LC’s Kaity Frost went 13-2-29. Loras is 3-1 in the IIAC. SC is 0-3.
No. 7 Carthage 3, No. 17 Chicago 2. Set 5 ended 15-10. Carthage also won in five sets last night. Chicago (11-1) suffers first loss. Carthage improved to 13-2, including five wins over teams currently in the top 25.
