9/20: Millikin/Carthage, Coe/Central early conference leaders

Millikin 3, Elmhurst 1. Watched it online. MU ups its CCIW record to 2-0. EC falls to 1-1. The MU All-Americans, outside Kelsy England and setter Brittany Cardott, were great. But I thought MU freshman middle Audrey Krajec was a game-changer. Krajec got a lot of touches and took some pace off the EC attacks. When EC had a chance to be in system, that is. EC had some bad passing and setting funks. EC was out of sorts for most the second and third sets.

Carthage 3, Wheaton 2. Watched it online. Fifth set ended 15-11. CC joins Millikin as the lone CCIW unbeatens. Wheaton falls to 1-1. Confirmed: WC can play defense and pass. That was a clinic. There just wasn’t enough diversity with WC’s third offensive contact to overcome CC. But it was a classic counter-punching performance from WC, which has played, and will continue to play, a difficult schedule. I was very impressed. The CCIW is loaded this year. Oh, and yes, CC did win.

Augustana 3, North Park 2. AC’s Brianna Skeens led all players with 24 kills. AC is 1-1 in the CCIW. NPU is 0-2.

North Central (Ill.) 3, Illinois Wesleyan. NCC moves to 1-1 in the CCIW. IWU falls to 0-2.

Coe 3, Wartburg 2. Watched it online. Fifth set ended 15-7. CC ups its IIAC record to 3-0. WC falls to 3-1. It was an offensive struggle all match for WC. Coe senior middle Kaitlin McClimon had 26 of the Kohawks’ 57 kills as she went 26-4-50.

Central 3, Dubuque 1. Central (3-0) and Coe are the lone IIAC unbeatens. UD falls to 0-2.

Grinnell 3, Beloit 1. MWC opener. BC falls to 0-12 overall.

Illinois College 3, Knox 0. MWC opener. KC hit -.072. KC falls to 0-11 overall.

Lawrence 3, Carroll 1. MWC opener. LU had 12 blocks. LU is officially my pick for the No. 2 seed behind St. Norbert at the MWC tourney.

Maranatha 3, Concordia Wisconsin 2. Fifth set ended 16-14. MBBC improves to 2-1 in the NAC. CUW falls to 2-1. MBBC’s Torey DeLozier went 32-18-77 with 24 digs.

Greenville 3, Principia 1. GC is 2-1 in the SLIAC. PC is 2-2.

Eureka 3, Blackburn 0. EC is 1-2 in the SLIAC. BC is 0-2.

I’ll be in Oshkosh for the Platteville match, so tomorrow’s update will be late. As always, say hello if you see me.
