Ricky Nelson’s 2011 preseason top 10

I won’t do it for the rest of the season, but for this poll I’ll add my next 20 teams, in no real order.

1. Emory
2. Washington
3. Calvin
4. Christopher Newport
5. Eastern
6. UW-Platteville
7. Carthage
8. Juniata
9. Wittenberg
10. Southwestern

The next 20: Heidelberg, Chicago, Concordia-Moorhead, UW-Whitewater, Wartburg, Cortland, Whitworth, Millikin, Hope, UMass Boston, Occidental, St. Scholastica, Elmhurst, Colorado, Amherst, Coast Guard, Thomas More, Trinity (TX), UW Oshkosh, Cal Lutheran.

Of course there are a few teams I think belong in the “Next 20,” but I’ll stick to these teams. What do you think?

  1. [...] My published opinion has Emory atop the rankings. View This Poll Share this:DiggRedditTwitterStumbleUponFacebookEmailPrintLike this:LikeBe the first to like this post. [...]

  2. [...] I had a rant ready to publish, but I’ll just write that I wish there was more prognostication in the AVCA preseason poll. I think that’s the beauty of polls – a collective produces a group-think. I disagree with the collective opinion on many teams. That’s healthy and expected. I also stand by my Top 10 and my next 20. [...]

  3. [...] WIAC sports information directors eschewed popular sentiment and chose UW-Whitewater to win the conference. UW-Platteville, mine and many other fans’ pick to win, finished fourth in the poll. The Pioneers are ranked ninth in the nation in the AVCA preseason poll. I think for good reason. I have Platteville ranked No. 6 in the country. [...]

  4. [...] how or why the voting was so close. I think St. Scholastica is not only the best UMAC team but a Top 25 candidate. It’s a program on the rise, but I’m sure the national – and probably the regional [...]

  5. [...] It’s been a while since the MIAC had a clear-cut favorite in my mind. In recent years cases could be made for a few teams in the preseason coaches’ poll. Partly due to circumstance and much to do with talent, I think Concordia is easily the team to beat this season. Concordia is currently just outside my preseason Top 10, but with nonconference matches against Juniata, Washington and Colorado, that could change rather quickly. Besides Concordia, I have a wait-and-see approach to the other MIAC teams in terms of national ranking. Another team or two will step up, but for now I only have Concordia in my top 30 teams. [...]

  6. [...] I had St. Scholastica among my top 30 teams. With St. Olaf heading into the post-Prunty/Smisek (All-America setter Kelly/All-America outside Kim) era, the Oles didn’t make my top 30. Even with those two, this could have been a decent match. I really think St. Scholastica can be that good. I get it. It’s one match, right? True, but I’m a believer in these Saints. [...]

  7. [...] are in the top 25! Another bandwagon team of mine from the preseason is Coast Guard. Yes, I had USCGA – 27th in the Week 1 poll! – in my top 25 before it beat Christopher Newport. Two other teams I liked a lot in the preseason – Southwestern [...]
